As we arrived, one of the boys was heard to remark that it looked like we were in India and it was quite hot like there too! The temple is as amazing on the outside as it is inside. On arrival the children had a talk with one of the volunteers who works there. We were welcomed with the traditional Hindu phrase: Namaste. We then went upstairs into the heart of the mandir to watch an aarti ceremony. The children were fascinated by the music and the devotion going on around them. They then had time to look at the different shrines and sketch their favourite. For many of them it was Hanuman, leader of the monkey army. After that we left the temple to have our lunch and the teachers bought some authentic Indian food from the adjacent supermarket to try back at school. This they all did today, even if they were a little spicy for some tastes! A great day was had by all and the children impressed the people at the temple with their knowledge.

It all arrived last week and the Year 1 and 2 Gardening Club were the lucky children to use it first. We have received 3 watering cans, a sieve, a soil thermometer, a set of plant labellers, some seeds (tomato, cabbage and brussel sprouts) as well as a child friendly wheel barrow. A huge thankyou to everyone who collected the vouchers.

The children were very busy yesterday at the allotment. Lots of weeding was done but the most exciting part was collecting our first vegetables of the year. We had spring onions, radishes and some delicious rhubarb. The children were all able to take some home with them and the rest of the spring onions were used in the school salad at lunch.

They were all very keen and once they had been given their own bike and put a helmet on, they were off. The instructors were looking for various skills during each session but the most important was having the bike under control. There were signals to do on the left and the right, emergency stopping, pedal ready, as well as learning how to change gears safely. The children were then awarded a pass or tips on what to concentrate on to pass next time. All of them had a great time and luckily for all concerned the rain held off for both days! Well done to all the children who took part.

On Monday, Year One had a wonderful time sightseeing in London.

We saw Trafalgar Square and Nelson's Column before walking along Whitehall to see the changing of the guards at Horseguards Parade. Next step was Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament before taking a river boat ride on the Thames in glorious sunshine. We enjoyed seeing the street artists on Southbank and then headed back to Charing Cross for the train journey back to New Eltham. Our legs were weary but spirits were high after a fantastic day in the "big smoke!"

"It was the best trip EVER! " said Ethan.

After some time to enjoy the play area and lunch outside, they had another fun packed afternoon looking for and classifying different invertebrates. After an exciting trip through the fjord at Aynesford they arrived at Lullingstone and spent just over an hour looking at the magnificent ruins and impressive mosaic flooring. There was also time to try on some Roman clothes, play traditional Roman games as well as create their own mosaic pattern. After a busy morning stepping back into "Roman times" they stopped for a picnic lunch by the river before returning to school in time for their afternoon activities.

They spent time completing a trail designed by Mr Elliott and looking at the different portraits and paintings. After a lovely morning, they walked to St James Park for a picnic lunch in the sun, before taking in some of London's famous sights including Horseguards Parade, Whitehall and 10 Downing Street. Next they spent the afternoon exploring Westminster Abbey and learning about the many famous people buried in the Abbey as well as walking down the famous aisle pretending to be Kate Middleton! It was a fabulous day with so many things to see and learn - here are some photos.

The children were busy digging, hoeing and raking. For many of them this was their first visit to the school's allotment. Mr Lawrence very kindly provided some salad leaves for the children to pot and take home. I hope they grow and flourish in their new gardens. The children also helped Mr Lawrence dig up some of his plot and were excited to find potatoes, carrots and parsnips! To finish, we planted some radishes and salad leaves. We will keep you posted how well they grow.

Continuing the garden theme, Year 3 have been busy in the school garden. There was a lot of work to do to prepare the three raised beds. One group found the biggest worm in the world (apparently!) whilst digging. Mrs Turner then did some maths with the children splitting the first raised bed into thirds and planting some radishes, coriander, nasturtium, salad leaves and some parsley. Fingers crossed they all grow! Please look at the garden if you venture past it in Parkview Road. We also have put some nesters in the pear tree for the birds to use. Hopefully they have not gone up too late.

After being greeted by members of the Buddhist community and being given a welcome drink and snack, the children met one of the resident monks. It was a great opportunity to ask questions about his life and work. Next we were taken inside the temple, an impressive building, which drew several gasps from the children. In keeping with Buddhist tradition the children had to leave their shoes outside before entering. Inside we looked at the shrine, which contained several different sized Buddha's including a golden Buddha and an emerald Buddha. The children learnt about the life story of Buddha which was depicted in beautiful murals all around the walls. It was an interesting day and we all came away having learnt something new!

Here are some of the children’s thoughts:

“The best bit was when we volunteered Mr Igglesden to become a mummy!”

“It was a very exciting and interesting trip.”

“I liked the bit when some of us went onto the stage to help with the mummification process.”

“My favourite artefacts were the dead person and the Rosetta Stone.”

“I recommend the British Museum as a superb educational trip.”

”I appreciate the fact that when painting a sarcophagus, if a mistake was made, they had to start again.”

“I love the fact that things which are so old are still in fabulous condition.”

“I loved my lunch!”

After such a busy day we all slept well, with many of us opting to sleep a little later until 7.30am this morning. We started the day with our final breakfast together - cereals, fruit, warm rolls and croissants before packing our bags and 'checking out' of our rooms.

We are spending the morning working in teams trying to solve different Anderson challenges and tackling a small climbing wall - all in the glorious sunshine!

After a packed lunch outside and a little free time we will be heading back to school this afternoon and should arrive back just after 2pm.

We have all really enjoyed our stay, and can't wait to see you and tell you about all of the new things we have tried, the exciting activities we have undertaken and the funny moments we have shared with each other. Whilst we may not admit it... we are also looking forward to an early night and a relaxing weekend!

What a wonderful time we have had in Wrotham.

After a breakfast visit from Mr Tilly we headed to Eynsford for our river investigation. The sun was shining and it was a perfect day for a dip in the River Darenth! We investigated the speed of the river and the depth at different points - as well as splashing around and filling our Wellington boots with water. The highlight of the morning had to be the treasure hunt in the river - despite initial suspicion many of us found hidden treasure at the bottom of the river bed and on closer inspection we have discovered that this treasure may be pieces of a rare plate dating back to the Victorian era... with this in mind, many of us are looking forward to taking our treasure on the Antiques Road Show!

After a lovely morning we returned to the centre to dry off and have lunch before another fun filled afternoon. We enjoyed a blind trail which involved us taking turns to lead our partners around the woodland. This was followed by some swinging, crawling, balancing, ducking and diving on the low ropes and tyres - which we loved!

We have visited the tuck shop, showered and enjoyed another delicious dinner of spaghetti bolognese or plain pasta followed by fruit salad and ice cream! We are just preparing for "disco night" in the barn - which we are really excited about.

It's been another fabulous, fun day and we are looking forward to our final morning here tomorrow and of course seeing you all :)

After the excitement of finding out which room we are in and unpacking we had time to play outside before lunch. This afternoon we have been on a two hour walk along the North Downs and climbed what some of us think is the Kent equivalent of Mount Everest! It was steep and very hot but we all made it! We had some time to catch our breath along the way when we stopped to sketch the view from the top of the hill.

You will be pleased to hear once back at the centre we have all showered (we were very sticky!) and have had fish and potatoes followed by apple crumble or fruit for dinner. We are just enjoying some free time on the field before coming inside for this evening's entertainment. Before bed we will be heading to the barn for table tennis, drawing and games. Then it will be a few chapters of Mr Stink with a cup of hot chocolate before we head to bed to get some sleep...

As you can imagine we are all incredibly excited and having a fantastic time - we can't believe day 1 is almost coming to an end but we are looking forward to another fun filled day at the river tomorrow.

After many months of planning, preparation and building our new site went live at 16.45 pm today. Congratulations to those pupils who during the past week have been checking to see when the site goes online. Some of you have already Emailed in to say that you have found it - and you think it's brilliant - well done!

The children were shown parts of the new web site and given a challenge for the holidays to spot when the new site goes online. To mark the occasion they were all given a helium balloon printed in school colours with the web address and school logo. Hopefully some of the balloons will make it home!

Concert

Last night's concert was a huge success

Rehearsal at All Saints Church

This event will take place for years three and four on 24th May 2011, from 9:30am to 11:00am.
