Supporting and extending learning...
|

St Olave’s is an inclusive school with the resources to support pupils with a wide variety of learning needs including dyslexia and dyspraxia. The department is led by a qualified teacher with additional diplomas from the Dyslexia Institute and the British Dyslexia Association.
Children who receive support from the Individual Needs teacher follow an Individual Educational Plan with appropriate learning targets. Multi-sensory lessons for children who require additional support are usually taught on a 1:1 basis or in small groups. In some cases learning support assistants give in-class help while a math games afternoon is available for children who have difficulty with numbers.
Parents are closely involved in the specialist support their child receives with teachers and workshops available to offer advice and guidance. Our experienced teachers are continually updating their specialised knowledge to ensure our pupils, from those with special needs to the most able, receive the appropriate learning. Lessons and homework are differentiated to incorporate the needs of children at both ends of the abilities range. Gifted and talented pupils receive additional support in small groups to develop their thinking and analytical skills. Our extension programme for particularly able children includes a Brainbusters lunchtime club as well as math and science enrichment clubs. Interactive whiteboards and computer games are used to help enhance each child’s learning experience.
