French at St Olaves
At St Olave’s, French is taught to all pupils from Reception to Year 6. French is introduced to Reception pupils in a once-a-week session of 20 minutes. This increases to two sessions a week of 20 minutes each in Year 1 and Year 2. In the Upper School, French is taught in two weekly sessions of 40 minutes each. The French curriculum is based on the guidance given in the Primary National Curriculum for Languages.
At St Olave’s authentic material is used as much as possible to offer pupils a real insight into French culture and way of life. Traditional French games, songs, books, toys commonly used by schools in France are used to support lessons. A yearly educational trip - different for each year group - serves to strengthen and support the cultural dimension of French learning at St Olave’s.
