Class Teachers

Class Teachers

The class teacher has a pivotal role in monitoring the welfare of the boys and girls in his or her class. The class teacher teaches the majority of subjects and therefore a close bond is formed. The class teacher is the first point of contact for a parent who has a question or concern to raise relating to their child.

Pastoral Care Policy

Pastoral care is embedded into everyday life at St Olave’s with pupils demonstrating tolerance and support towards others. Class teachers teach the majority of subjects allowing them to develop a positive and mutually respectful relationship with each pupil. There is always someone a child can turn to for help and advice while weekly staff meetings ensure that all teachers are aware of any particular issues.

Buddies

Buddies

Some Year 6 pupils are Buddies with the responsibility of meeting Reception children at the gate and taking them to the playground. Through this responsbility they become very familiar faces to the younger pupils, both in school and in the playground. This makes for a much more welcoming start to the school day.

School Council

School Council

Our School Council consists of elected representatives from each Year group starting at Year 2. Its purpose is to give every child a voice. The council meetings are chaired, organised and minuted by the children. A member of staff is present to help facilitate the meetings. The School Council endeavours to teach the children that when adults and children work together, the results can benefit the whole school community. The School Council is also involved in contributing to wider community through fund raising activities. We believe that this encourages the children to develop and to grow into responsible and caring individuals.

Houses

Houses

Upper School pupils are put into 4 Houses – Owls, Hawks, Kestrels and Eagles. They can earn points for their House through good work, behaviour and a generally supportive and helpful attitude. Pupils vote for their House Captain and Vice-Captain and inter-house sports activities and competitions are regular features. This system helps establish the importance of clearly defined roles and collective responsibility. House Captains organise regular House Assemblies.

Assemblies

Assemblies

Daily assemblies help promote cohesiveness and are an opportunity to underline the school’s values and objectives. Successes are recognised and rewarded in front of the whole school. Each class will prepare and deliver an assembly for pupils and parents. On Friday afternoons we hold an assembly where we recognise and reward children for their achievements both in and out of school. These assemblies clearly reflect the school’s ethos that all children are valued and all achievements are recognised.

Monitors

All Year 6 pupils are monitors with responsibilities in the school including helping in the Lower School, Librarians and supporting activities in ICT, Music and PE.
